How Bowen works.
A precise gentle Bowen move works directly with the body’s fascia. (Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that covers the whole body) It works to readdress misalignment of the structures in the body that can cause musculoskeletal breakdown, pain and injury. A Bowen Treatment can also access and address tensions that occur on a deeper physical level, when structural integrity of postural muscles are compromised, the whole system is compromised. The gentle moves on the soft tissue sends signals via your fascia to change the tensions in the body, returning optimum levels of wellness and restoring balance, resulting in a more relaxed state of being.
What to expect in a Bowen Session.
In a Bowen Session, a series of light-touch moves are made on specific areas of the body. Moves are made on skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.(Although treatments can also be done over light clothing)
Your first session will last about an hour and a half, (follow ups last an hour). Primarily there will be a consultation and postural assessment, in order to gain a fuller picture of what might be causing pain/imbalance in the body.
After the consultation, you will be asked to lie down on a couch face down. Alternatively if the condition is chronic or pain levels are very high treatments can also be done in a chair or where ever the client is most comfortable. When comfortable, the Bowen Practitioner will then begin working on the lower back, with a series of specific gentle moves across the fascia of the muscles using the thumbs and forefingers. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and the treatment is very gentle, subtle and relaxing. When a series of moves have been made, the practitioner leaves the room for a couple of minutes to allow the body to respond to the message that has been sent. The ‘gap’ is where “the magic happens”. Given time, the body can respond. The message is received clearly by the brain, sometimes you might even feel it by way of physical sensation, either a tummy gurgle, or hot or cold flushing in a specific area. On the first session most of the work is done on the back, the client then turns over and treatment finishes with the neck/head. This simple form of holistic treatment is very relaxing and proficient at restoring structural integrity.
What is Bowen good for?
Primarily Bowen is very efficient at working with stress in the body. Its non-invasive style creates a relaxed atmosphere in the body. If tension or stress is high, then the body’s natural response is to protect itself by putting up defence, which is counter productive for healing. Bowen’s subtle attitude makes it a suitable treatment for people of all ages, from babies to the very elderly. Bowen is an effective treatment on a varied spectrum of issues.
Bowen is a very efficient way of treating many conditions.
Listed below are particular issues that I have treated successfully using Bowen :
- Back Pain – Disc problems/Chronic issues
- Postural – Structural/Alignment issues (Foot/Knee/Hip/Pelvic/Spine/Jaw)
- Emotional Imbalance (Menstrual/Hormonal)
- Life Transition (Loss/Break-ups/Historic Trauma)
- Respiratory problems (Asthma/Hayfever )
- Constipation and Digestive problems(IBS)
- Frozen Shoulder/Arm restrictions/(RSI)
- Sports injuries
- Kidney and bladder disorders (including incontinence)
- Birth Trauma
- Post Cancer Treatment (Surgery/Chemotherapy/Radiotherapy)
Bowen Aftercare advice.
It is important for you to observe the following:
Please don’t sit for more than ½ an hour at a time (on the day of treatment only). If you stand and walk around the chair you were sitting on, and then sit down again, that is sufficient. Please don’t forget this if you are in a car.
After or between treatments:
- Drink plenty of water – little and often is best
- Do plenty of walking – at least 15 minutes a day
- Practice any exercise(s) that you may have been set
AND avoid the following (preferably for 1 week after treatment):
- Sitting with your legs crossed
- Hot-water bottles/packs of frozen peas
- Electric blankets
- Deep-heat rubs
- Long, hot baths – a warm bath for no longer than 10 minutes is OK
- Hot, hard showers – a power shower is out of the question. A gentle flow, not too hot is OK.
If the jaw has been worked on, you should avoid yawning. Please keep your teeth together or support your lower jaw with your hand if you feel a yawn coming on. Fruit/food which requires a wide jaw movement (such as apples) should be avoided or cut up. Avoid hard food such as nuts, and very chewy foods like toffees.
Any other form of treatment. This is very important. If you wish to have any other form of treatment, please wait 7 days until doing so. waiting will help to avoid overload and help decipher which modality is offering the best results. Herbal and homeopathic and any other conventional medicine, is of course fine.
After treatment you may feel stiff and achey, pain levels can increase. Do not panic. There is a three day healing/ adjustment period, after a treatment, in which your body will try to reorganise itself. If you are in a lot of pain, please do not rub the area. If pain levels exceed 8/9, 10 being acute, then do take a pain killer (although it may interfere/block neuropathic signals set up by the treatment) use Arnica or Rescue Remedy if necessary. If after 4 days you are still in a lot of pain, or you are worried, please feel free to call. Some people can feel a little emotional after Bowen, which is also ‘normal’
A second treatment is recommended, and needs to be between 5 and 10 days after the initial treatment, 7 being optimum. Observing the above as much as possible will help Bowen to be effective.
